Life Skills through Public Speaking

Would you rather give a speech for a crowd of people or have a tooth pulled? If you choose a trip to the dentist, you wouldn't be alone! Some surveys and research results show most people would rather do almost anything in lieu of talking in front of a live audience. The fear of public speaking, glossophobia, is the most common phobia. It's even beating out the fear of spiders - arachnophobia, darkness – achluophobia, flying – aerophobia, thunder and lightning – brontophobia or the fear of confined spaces – claustrophobia!
This story has been repeated countless times; a shy, young 4-H member is barely able to introduce herself at a club meeting. Then this youth is encouraged to give a speech at 4-H County Events. This first time the she is nervous and fumbles, but the judges were kind and shared positive comments for improvement. The next year, the 4-H'er is more confident and gives a blue ribbon presentation. Each year her skills grow with each public speaking experience. As her communication skills increase she gains self-esteem and even leadership skills. Eventually she feels confident enough to become a summer camp counselor or 4-H Club officer.
4-H Youth Development is giving kids the opportunity and providing the skills necessary to beat that fear of public speaking! Recently 139 4-H members competed in the 4-H County Events day February 6th, 2010 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Inverness or the make-up event February 16th. County Events hosts several different competitions. Demonstrations/Illustrated Talks (speeches with visual aids) allow the 4-H member to share with others what they have learned over the course of their 4-H project work. Share-the-Fun, a talent contest, allows 4-H'ers to enhance appreciation of talent and builds confidence. Tabletop Exhibits, was developed for the youngest 4-H'ers to be able to display their projects and respond to judges questions without the pressure of giving a formal presentation.
4-H Youth Development is a community of young people, learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills that prepare them for adulthood and to become successful members of society.
